Australian Election 2013 and a Look-alike politician.

September 7, 2013

EDIT : Kevin Rudd stepped down as leader.

This evening in between screams of a teething child, channel 10 was kind enough to provide me with the commentary + coverage of the 2013 federal election. The 7 pm Project had an extended edition covering the latest news from the vote counts together with a long panel of various politicians. So what are my thoughts?

By the looks of things Kevin Rudd will be licking his wounds tonight with a major swing of voted moving away from the Labor party. That is not to say that he was vanquished forever from the political game like the now already half forgotten Julia Gillard.

I have just read that Mr Rudd is stepping down to make way for a new face. I can imagine world leaders around the world getting the memo/phone-call to update them on the change of leadership in Australia, and them exclaiming with frustration “What! again?!”

While Tony Abbott is crowned emperor, I mean declared a new Prime Minister, I hope the majority of seats his party receives in both houses of parliament do not make him drunk with power, otherwise the fickle pendulum of public opinion will swing back around.

You might ask who I voted for? Well I will just say this, I put a couple of minor parties before the the big two, to inject some more diversity of opinions into the public sphere.

As much as sometimes it feels like Labor and the Liberals are two polar ends, I find they are very centrists parties. Many of the policies are very similar. There are policies I support in each party but oppose in the other, so at times it reminds me of a scene from the tv series Futurama of the two clone-like candidates.

On a more random note, on the same show one of the guests on their panel was Jason Clare, a  Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives for the seat of Blaxland in the western suburbs of Sydney.  He reminded me so much of the Hollywood actor Christian Bale. I had to do a comparison photo of the two. When googling the two men, some photos didn’t look much alike, but some amazingly do. Anyway If anyone else noticed the similarities let me know.
